Meet Vivienne

Portrait of Vivienne Austin, with a sharp pink and red bob, magenta lipstick and a black chain-link choker

Designer. Educator. Author. Founder.

Vivienne Austin has spent her career on both sides of the cutting table: designing clothes, and teaching other people how to. She studied at Central Saint Martins and started out in British fashion, designing for major high-street retailers, before creating her own clubwear collections, which sold internationally through the 1990s.

Her work has also taken her to Miami and New York, where she designed for Seventh Avenue fashion companies. She has held senior design positions, developed collections for international markets and, in 2005, designed swimwear for Liberty's own-brand collection. Along the way her work has been featured in British Vogue, ELLE, i-D, The Guardian and the Evening Standard, and recognised by the fashion forecasting platform WGSN.

Teaching is the other half of the story. Vivienne has taught fashion design at the Royal College of Art and Winchester School of Art, taught at the American College in London and worked as a visiting design lecturer in Vietnam. Her teaching spans fashion design, pattern cutting and illustration, and she mentors emerging designers as they build their own work.

In 2013 she completed an MA in Fashion Futures at London College of Fashion, focusing on sustainability and the future of fashion. That question, how to make things better rather than simply more, runs through Scarlet Destiny and the other creative labels she has established.

Scarlet Destiny Publishing brings all of it to the page: a designer's eye for colour and composition, a teacher's knack for making specialist knowledge easy to pick up, and a refusal to make anything ordinary. Her books mix creative expression, visual culture and accessible learning with an irreverent streak of individuality. The Fashion + Design Word Search Book builds real fashion vocabulary. Say It in Color turns lettering and colour into something to say. Gratitude With Attitude proves that reflection does not need to be sugary.
